6/15/20 -Touch of Serenity Phase II Re-Opening: Expanding to New Clients with Referrals
This message is being sent to existing clients and to those not yet a part of my practice. My last communication to this broader community was sent at the end of April. All communications since the pandemic began can be found here.
Touch of Serenity Massage Therapy re-opened to existing clients on May 26th. At this point, I’m ready to expand availability to new clients with referrals from either health care professionals or existing clients, and prenatal clients.
First-time clients must call 336.327.2915 to book your first session, and after that, online booking will be available for you (the link allows you to see how it works and current openings. Existing clients can use this link). Please remember that when I’m with clients, I cannot answer the phone. I will return your call by day’s end. There are a few openings this week and more in the coming weeks and months.
If you are not new to massage, you will notice that there are changes, but one thing remains — my commitment to your safety and health. You can review testimonials here.
“I felt safe and well cared for by Ruth. Always delightful and enjoyable experience. So glad to be back!!!”
-P.H. (post COVID re-opening) ![]() When you book, you will receive a confirmation email containing important information. Please read it in its entirety. It tells you what you will need to do before and upon arrival to your massage and what to expect from me. An excerpt can be found at the end of this message.
Protocols will be updated as new guidance and best practices continue to emerge. I ask for your continued patience and compliance.
I’m hoping to see low-risk clients beginning around 1pm and save the mornings for clients in the high-risk* category. Please take this into consideration when booking. Please note that there may be some slight shifting in scheduling to accommodate the new protocols and I ask for your understanding and flexibility.
*The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines high-risk individuals as people 65 years or older and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions, including people who are immunocompromised or who have chronic lung disease, moderate-to-severe asthma, serious heart conditions, severe obesity, diabetes, chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis, or liver disease.
![]() The waiting list is always an option! If you can’t find a desired time on my schedule, please ask to be placed on the waiting list. Call or text 336.327.2915 or email me at info@TouchOfSerenityNC.com using “Waiting List” as the subject line. Please include your name, how to get in touch with you, the date, preferred time, and the type and length of massage that you are interested in. If there’s a cancellation, I’ll call or text you as soon as I can.
I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about these revised steps or anything else to keep you, and every client, safe in my practice.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
In wellness and with gratitude,
Ruth

Sample Excerpt of Protocols from Confirmation Email:
CHANGES IN PROTOCOL PRIOR TO AND UPON YOUR ARRIVAL FOR YOUR MASSAGE:
Before Arriving:
1. Family and friends are not allowed to accompany you inside the building, unless the client requires a legal guardian/parent.
2. Wear a clean face mask to our office. The mask must be worn from the time you enter the facility until you leave. Anyone with longer hair should have it tied back or up and away from your face.
3. If you’d like more than a sheet covering you during your massage, bring a CLEAN blanket for your session (twin size will work), although there can be heat on the table. 4. Bring and wear as little as you can with you to your session. The waiting and treatment rooms have been decluttered of items that might require continuous disinfecting (e.g, magazines, pillows, candies). 5. Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.First-time clients should arrive 15 minutes prior to complete a Health History form and Client Intake Form. All clients, new and returning must complete a Coronavirus Liability Release Form. All forms are available at: https://touchofserenitync.com/wp/linksresources/ if you’d like to complete them in advance. Upon Arrival: During the Session:
1. After the initial intake, talking will be limited to communication about pressure, warmth, and comfort while in the enclosed space of the treatment room. (I know!)
2. Because a face mask is worn for the duration of the massage, safe face massage is not possible and therefore prohibited at this time.
3. Intra-oral massage is prohibited at this time because it increases the risk of COVID-19 exposure.
After Your Session: What to Expect From Me: Note: These protocols are in compliance with NC Executive Order 141 that outlines the guidelines for beginning Phase 2 for business operations including massage therapists (we are included under “Personal Care, Grooming, and Tattoo Businesses”) as well as the guidance provided by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) for massage, the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB), the NC Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy (NCBMBT), and the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP).
I include the links above, not because I expect you to read them all, rather to offer complete transparency in why I’m implementing these protocols.

4/23/20 – NC Executive Order 135 – Stay-At-Home Order Extended to May 8
4/20/20: Touch of Serenity Massage Therapy Touching Base
While we all await notice from our Governor on whether or not Executive Order 120 will be extended or not, I am considering how the effects of the pandemic should change my practice going forward.
I am planning to re-open once our local curve is flattened and testing becomes much more available. As of now, I do not know when that will be. While I have not yet canceled massages scheduled for later this month and into May, there is a high likelihood that I may need to postpone those sessions. I ask for your continued patience.
The following is broken down into “What I Will Continue To Do,” “New Safety and Precautionary Measures,” and “What I Will Ask Of You.” This all continues to be subject to change as new information and guidance becomes available.

As always, I appreciate my clients more than words can express. I’m especially grateful for those of you on the front-lines and continuing to perform essential work in our community.
Please continue to find reasons to be kind, compassionate, and helpful to yourself and others. Thanks to those of you who have taken the time to reach out and share with me what’s been going on in your life and the things you’ve been doing in service to others. I have been assisting PPEopleBrigade-gsonc in making face shields for front-line medical workers.
I’m open to your feedback and suggestions to any and all of this.
Your PARTNER in Health. Stay safe and continue to take all of this one day at a time!
In wellness and with gratitude,

Until we can meet in person again, any time that you are in the vicinity of other people with whom you are not living, remember to observe the following precautions:
|
3/24/20: NC Executive Order 120 – An Update from Touch of Serenity Massage Therapy

3/17/20: An Important Message from Touch of Serenity Massage Therapy Concerning COVID-19
3/16/20: Coronavirus COVID-19 Safety and Prevention from Touch of Serenity Massage Therapy

- Continuing to wash my hands up to my elbows before and after every client session, changing all the massage table sheets and towels, and washing lotion/oil bottles.
- Between each client, I am sanitizing the entire treatment room, bathroom and waiting areas including chairs, surfaces, doorknobs, switches, faucets and levers as well as pens, clipboards, payment screens, etc. Please be patient if there are slight delays because of this.
- Remember that I see only one client at a time so this greatly reduces your risk. Bringing relief, relaxation, and a touch of serenity…one client at a time.
- If you are healthy, not been traveling within the past two weeks, and not engaged in potentially high-exposure activities I hope to see you.
- Upon arrival and prior to sitting in the waiting area, please go straight to the bathroom and wash your hands with soap and water, as prescribed by the WHO techniques that are posted, including wiping down the surfaces you touched.
- Please limit your “touches” — use the hooks for your clothes and place all personal belongings in your purse or a pocket.
- If you are experiencing any cold/flu/virus symptoms, please reschedule your massage for when you are healthy. There will be no penalty for cancellations and my 24-hour cancellation policy has been temporarily suspended, although as much notice as possible is greatly appreciated. No shows will be charged in full.
- Feel free to bring your own CLEAN sheets and blankets if you prefer, but please let me know in advance.
What Else You and I Can Do:
- Maintain social distancing (3-6 feet from others).
- Find reasons to be kind, compassionate, and helpful to yourself and others.
- If you are finding extra time on your hands especially with children, there are many creative activities being posted of things to do.
- Whether you can make your massage or not, given this unprecedented time of uncertainty, please find additional ways to help yourself relax including: at-home yoga/stretching, meditating/praying, virtual visits to stay connected, volunteering, getting out in nature, looking for things that make you smile, creating a gratitude list, and not over-indulging in unhealthy activities.
- Stay informed using trusted sources (e.g., CDC), but avoid “news overdosing” that can really affect your mood.

3/24/18: Two new studies on the positive effects of massage:
Massage Reduces Cancer-Related Fatigue
(published in Body Sense Magazine Spring 2018)
A recent study published in the medical journal Cancer found that Swedish massage therapy, delivered over the course of six weeks to breast cancer patients, provided a significant reduction in their cancer-related fatigue (CRF). CRF is a persistent, exhausting condition affecting approximately one-third of cancer survivors. The study, conducted by researchers at Emory University in Atlanta, enrolled 66 female stage 0–III post-treatment breast cancer survivors who had received surgery and radiation and/or chemotherapy/chemo-prevention. The participants, who were unfamiliar with massage therapy, were given a weekly 45-minute Swedish massage by licensed massage therapists over the course of six weeks. The recipients reported they experienced “clinically meaningful” improvement in their CRF as a result of the massage therapy. While still in early-trial phase, this research has significant implications for cancer patients going forward. For more information, read the full study at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29044466.
Massage Alleviates Muscle Soreness After Exercise
(published in Body Sense Magazine Winter 2017)
A recent report published in Frontiers in Physiology found that massage therapy decreases muscle soreness after strenuous exercise. In a systematic review and metaanalysis, researchers evaluated the effects of massage therapy on alleviating delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and muscle performance after strenuous exercise.
Researchers found that muscle soreness decreased significantly for participants who received massage intervention after heavy exercise compared with those who had no intervention. Massage therapy also improved muscle maximal isometric force and peak torque.
The findings suggest that massage therapy after strenuous exercise could be effective for alleviating DOMS and improving muscle performance. To read the full study, go to www.ncbi.nlm.nih. gov/pmc/articles/PMC5623674.
3/1/18: Are you a folded cashew or a table?
To hip hinge:
1. Place your feet about 12 inches apart.
2. Keep your back straight.
3. As you bend your knees, allow your pubic bone to move backward.
4. Fold over by allowing your pubic bone to slide through your legs, down and back.
2/7/18: Valentine’s Day is just one week away and only 4 openings remain. Don’t miss out! Make sure to book your Touch of Serenity Valentine’s couples massage today!
1/14/18: Valentine’s Day is just one month away. Make sure to book your Touch of Serenity Valentine’s couples massage today!
1/3/18: Happiest and Healthiest of New Years to all. If you’re looking to start your new year off on a healthy note — take the 30 day Plank Challenge! I will also post on Facebook. I completed it on December 26th and I do feel stronger my core! It was the perfect antidote to the holidays and helped spur on more healthy eating choices (ok, I indulged a little, but not as much as in previous years). I highly recommend it and encourage you to use an accountability partner to help you stick with it!
1/1/18: Effective today, there are some slight price increases to some of the longer sessions, some services, and a few of the packages. Please note them when booking. If you are currently in an existing package, no additional fee will be charged until you purchase another package. This is the first price increase since my business started over 6 years ago.
